What is Sleep Apnea?

Sleep Apnea is a sleep disorder in which the soft tissue in person’s throat repeatedly collapses and blocks the air from entering the lungs. This complete or reduced pause in breathing can last anywhere from 10 seconds to a minute or more. These episodes can occur hundreds of times a night, which can lead to significantly lower levels of oxygen in the blood. This causes the brain to perceive the body as suffocating, which causes arousal from sleep and normal breathing to resume.

Take Home Sleep Studies

To diagnose obstructive sleep apnea, our practice provides take home sleep studies. This test collects information about how a patient breathes during sleep, and some measure blood oxygen level and heart rate. An at-home sleep study provides patients with an alternative to an in-lab sleep study. The sleep study is usually conducted over the course of 1-3 nights, and then the equipment is returned, the data downloaded and then interpreted by a sleep physician.

Sleep Apnea Appliances

If you have been diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea, one of the many treatment options available is custom-made oral appliances. Our dental practice can fit you for an oral appliance and help alleviate the symptoms of sleep apnea. An oral appliance supports your jaw and helps you maintain an open airway. It is worn like a retainer or mouth guard. Together with you, Dr. Olivo and our team will determine if a custom-fit oral appliance is the right treatment option for your sleep apnea or snoring.
